Michael’s 10 Tips for Quarantine Survival

  1. Self-care: ALWAYS shower in the morning, brush your teeth, even if you're alone. Put on deodorant. Dress and groom like you're about to walk out the door.

  2. Get up and move every 30 minutes to an hour. No matter what you're doing, move your body a bit.

  3. Reach out to friends however you can. Don't feel bad if it's just on your phone via text, everything helps. Video chats are great, given current restrictions.

  4. Seriously: friends and family. They are the only surefire way I have found to stave off depression.

  5. Exercise however you can. This doesn't mean you have to be sweating by the end! A walk around the block is amazing when your mind just needs to feel free for a while.

  6. Create a to-do list with only 3 items. Tackle them 1 at a time, even if it seems inane or unimportant. When you're done, relax and stop working. Watch YouTube, do whatever you want, and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment. You are important, useful, and contributing to something vital: your own well-being, and perhaps that of others.

  7. Try something new, and give yourself permission to only do it once if you're not a fan. I haven't played guitar for 3 years, but I'm poking away at it on occasion. The key is that you shouldn't feel obligated to do anything. Let your curiosity determine what's next.

  8. Start a passion project. This isn't always applicable, but putting energy and effort into something you've always wanted to do can be so rewarding. I'm working on my own D&D-style RPG. We've got all the free time now, and (only if you're feeling it) now is a golden opportunity to tackle a big project.

  9. Eat defined meals. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack here and there. I struggle with this one, but Julia is amazing at making dinner every night (like, SO AMAZING, thank you thank you thank you), and it helps me keep my other meals structured.

  10. Give yourself permission to fail. You're allowed to have an off day. You're allowed to feel crappy, down, depressed. It happens to *everyone*, meaning, everyone will be able to relate and help you. I refer you to #3 once you're up for it.
